The Ghaziabad police on Tuesday arrested a 27-year-old drug addict for allegedly killing a five-year-old girl after sexually assaulting her.
According to the police, the accused, identified as Ravi Kashyap, used to stay in the neighbourhood of the victim’s family and frequent their house. He has a three-year-old daughter, the police said.
Kashyap told the police that he was a drug addict and had consumed about 20 pills on the day of the incident.
He said he had been taking drugs for many years. But his drug addiction became worse after the death of his wife one-and-a-half years ago.
“I knew the girl’s family. On the day of the incident, she asked me for Rs. 20 to buy candies, but I refused. Later, I took her to a vacant plot in Subhash Nagar and started sexually assaulting her. As she started screaming, I forcibly covered her mouth with my hand and hit her face with a brick many times, which caused the death,” he told the police.
The police said after the incident came to light, Kashyap even expressed solidarity with the victim’s family and spearheaded protests on NH-58, in which hundreds of locals blocked the highway for hours and vandalised public property and vehicles.
“I did this to avoid suspicion,” he told the police.
Meanwhile, police officials said the medical reports of the victim did not confirm rape but there were indications of sexual assault. “The accused had tried to force himself on the girl but failed. We have added sections of rape to the FIR,” said SSP Prashant Kumar.
Meanwhile, the victim’s father has sought death for Kashyap.
