A fight over a boiled egg at a tavern cost life of an ex-sarpanch and left other injured on Sunday night.
The deceased Sushil Singh was consuming alcohol at a roadside tavern on Barsat road in the town when he got into a fight with other group sitting next to his table.
A resident of Kutana village in Rohtak, Sushil was visiting Panipat for an unspecified reason and was drinking alone at the tavern on Sunday night.
Investigation officer Sandeep Kumar told HT on Monday evening that a drunken Sushil forcibly picked an egg served on Pritam's table to which his (Pritam's) friends strongly opposed.
Soon they indulged in a verbal fight but Pritam's friends cautioned Sushil to mind his way and let him go.
Before leaving the tavern, he asked for Pritam's mobile phone and threatened them.
Sushil left the tavern in a huff but soon he returned after 15-20 minutes with a revolver in his hand.
Sushil, who was in inebriated condition, called Prtiam on his cell and dared him to face him at the tavern.
Unaware of the fact that Sushil was carrying a loaded weapon, a well-built Pritam too dared him to enter the tavern.
IO Sandeep said that Sushil challenged the group and fired three bullets which fortunately strayed into the wall.
As a bullet hit Pritam in his left shoulder, he overpowered Sushil and shot him dead in the chest.
He said that the weapon used in the crime was recovered from spot but the police was yet to confirm if Sushil was carrying a weapon or got it from somewhere.
Pritam, who is under treatment at a private hospital in the town, has been booked for murdering Sushil.
This was the fourth shooting incident reported in last three days in which four persons were gunned down in the district.
Two persons, including a key witness in a case against a dreaded jailed gangster and a constable, were shot dead by a group of assailants on Saturday.
In the wee hours of Sunday, the police found a bullet-ridden body of a local property dealer.
