Three people were injured when a drunken driver hit three motorcycles and a rickshaw on Wagle Estate Road in Thane on Sunday night.
The driver, Wagle Estate resident Ramaswamy Periswamy (44), was arrested by the Shreenagar police.
Two of the injured — Amit Upadhyay (25) and Mahesh Budhkar (24) — were admitted to hospitals, while the third, Bhiwandi resident Prasad Patil (23), received minor injuries.
Periswamy, who works at a textile mill in Ghatkopar, was driving a Skoda brought to Thane by his brother Manohar, a driver employed by a Byculla-based businessman.
“They had three pegs of whisky each. Later, Periswamy asked his brother for the car,” said Senior Inspector S.B. Ohol of Shreenagar police station.
Periswamy tried to flee but was caught by passersby and a police team.
“A medical test revealed that he was drunk. We registered a case of rash and drink driving and causing hurt” said Ohol.
“I was going home after dropping my sister to hospital [her workplace]. The Skoda took a sharp turn, hit two bikes in front of me and then crashed into my vehicle,” said Budhkar, a rickshaw driver. He was hurt on his hand and back.
Upadhyay, a resident of Sathenagar, was riding pillion on a friend’s bike when Periswamy hit it.
“My father passed away on Saturday and I was supposed to go to Nashik to perform the final rites. But now I can’t go,” said Upadhayay, who is undergoing treatment at Sai Hospital in Shivajinagar.
The police have seized the Skoda and are waiting for its owner and the accused’s brother, who is absconding, to report to the police station.
