Apart from courses and faculties, what is it that makes a college attractive? What else must you consider before deciding to spend three years of your life at a particular college? To help you in making a better choice, we did a exhaustive survey of Delhi University (DU) colleges in which we found out which college has the best canteen, which college has the best-dressed crowd, which college has the most happening freshers party, and which college’s festival is the best.
Five hundred students (10 from each of DU’s 50 colleges) were interviewed. The respondents were asked to rate the top three colleges. Here is the result of this never-before-done survey, which was conducted by Market Excel Data Matrix, a market research company. This week, we come out with the Best Canteen list.
And the award goes to...
The top three colleges in the ‘Best Canteen’ category are Hans Raj College, Hindu College and Ramjas College. These colleges are followed by St. Stephen’s, Sri Venkateswara, Miranda House and Shri Ram College of Commerce.
Respondents said that the canteen at Hans Raj College is “big” and the food is “fresh and clean”, the last two parameters clearly being of importance to the student crowd. Students were particularly conscious about the availability of space in the canteen and “hygienic food.”
At No. 2, Hindu College scored points on the basis of the fact that “the canteen has both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options.” Like Hans Raj College, Hindu too has “hygienic and fresh food” and it too has a “large hall.”
While Ramjas College is at number three, it fares no worse than the top two colleges mentioned above. Respondents pointed out that “good variety of food is available in the canteen.” A few gave it their vote because they found the “food to be spicy and the service quick.”
To the uninformed, the canteen at St Stephen’s is not called a canteen. It’s referred to as café. The omelettes and cutlets are served with knives and forks on china crockery, a rare phenomenon in DU. Yet, the college missed out being in the Top 3 list. As for the dishes, not only omelettes, the “fresh fruit juices” are also a favourite among students here.
Sri Venkateswara (Venky), fifth on the list, has an impressive canteen too but doesn’t quite cut the mark to figure in the top league. Its southern specialty dishes are popular. A student of the college said, “Teachers and students from other college prefer to have their lunch in our college .”
Venky is followed by Miranda House, Shri Ram College of Commerce, Kirori Mal College, Jesus & Mary College and Kamala Nehru College.
