The Delhi University has urged the ministry of social justice and empowerment to provide the status of ‘third gender’ to the transgender community.

The Department of Adult, Continuing Education and Extension said it expected the ministry to grant the status by January.

“The department has been strongly advocating the use of ‘third gender’ to identify the transgender people. As part of the committee, I have been working with the ministry finalise this. It is expected to be enforced by January,” said Rajesh, head, Department of Adult, Continuing Education and Extension.

“This time, during the elections, we saw the use of ‘other’ for the transgender community. That still speaks of marginalisation. We want to do away with it,” he added. Members of the 30,000-strong transgender community in the city said this would open a host of opportunities for them. “It will force people and organisations to acknowledge us and we can have access to jobs and rights,” said Nitu (name changed).
