Early snowfall good for fruit crop: Experts

According to agriculture experts, the early snowfall in the high altitude of Himachal Pradesh would be beneficial for good fruit crop in the state in the winter season.

Former director of Mashobra Fruit Research Center SP Bhardwaj said in every season apple and other fruit crops require optimum 14 to 15 hours chilling treatment with mercury at freezing point in the high altitude for most of days in the winter especially with snowy weather.

The chilling treatment helps the farmers to bring normal produce as it make their orchards pest free as no disease infest the crop round the year after chilling treatment.

Minimum temperature in the apple belt was required between zero to five degrees which is considered ideal for chilling treatment, said Shimla Meteorological Department director Manmohan Singh.

The frosty weather in the winter also keeps the soil texture moist which also help the farmers for making tree beds also called 'Tawalya' in local parlance.

Fruit growers also used this winter season for pruning the extra shoots on the fruit plant which give good crops after thinning extra plant growth. Biannual pruning provides good sunlight and extra air to the plants and orchards.

He said these days fruit growers also adopting new techniques after putting pollinators grafting on the trees.

They were now bringing honey bee from far of places which help them with good crops after pollinator grafting adds it to their yield.
