The CBI arrested East Bengal Club official Debabrata Sarkar alias Nitu on Wednesday evening in connection with the Saradha scam. On August 14, CBI sleuths had carried out a search in his north Kolkata residence and seized a few incriminating documents that led to his arrest.
The CBI had found a letter written by Saradha owner Sudipta Sen to Sarkar in which Sen asked him about the outcome of the latter’s efforts to fix the tussle with a SEBI official. Sarkar had allegedly taken Rs40 crore promising him to arrange a settlement between Sen and highly-placed SEBI officials.
Sarkar, who is widely known as Nitu in the sports circuit of Bengal, is the heart and brain of the club.
He is, however, just an executive committee member in the club. People close to him said Sarkar always avoided top positions, remaining mostly behind the scenes.
Sen in his letter to the CBI mentioned how Nitu was extorting money with the promise to make an under-the-table settlement between him and the SEBI officials since 2010.
