EC cracks whip on Pramod Mahajan

EC directed case against Mahajan for addressing press conference after campaign period came to an end.

The Election Commission on Sunday directed the Chief Electoral Officer of Assam to file a case against senior BJP leader Pramod Mahajan and some others for addressing a press conference in the poll-bound state after the campaign period came to an end on Saturday.

The Commission asked the CEO to instruct the District Election Officer of Kamrup district to file the case under provisions of the the Representation of Peoples Act against Mahajan and organisers of the press conference, EC sources said.

The EC held the view that holding a press conference after the close of campaign amounted to holding a public meeting which is prohibited under the Act.

After seeing the report received from the CEO that Mahajan had addressed the press conference after end of campaign, the Commission passed the order.
