The Election Commission is likely to announce the date for assembly elections in Kashmir soon, according to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) VS Sampath. "We will get back to Delhi and will require some more deliberations before we can make up our mind," he said on Saturday.
However, Election Commissioner HS Brahma hinted that the election dates might be announced with the poll schedule for Jharkhand. “We won’t be able to decide sitting here as Jharkhand elections are also due and getting delayed because of Jammu and Kashmir, so we will have to take into account all these issues before coming to any conclusion," Brahma said.
Earlier in the day, the CEC met representatives of various political parties in the state as a part of their ongoing assessment of the situation. The EC help detailed discussions with bureaucrats and police officials to review the infrastructure required for conduct of elections in the state.
“While quite a few political parties were in support of holding elections on time, some others mentioned that elections would interfere with relief and rehabilitation, which is of prime importance at this time," Sampath said.
The EC however refused to divulge details about stand of the parties post floods.
As reported by HT earlier, while the ruling National Conference is in favour of deferment of the elections, other political parties including BJP, PDP and the Congress are in favour of holding the elections on time.
