For the first time ever, there is an official figure for transgenders in India above the age of 18.
The Election Commission, which registers people above the age of 18 as voters, on Wednesday released the data on registration of trans-genders as people other than male and female.
As of mid-February, 28,341 people have declared their sexual preference to EC officials who had conducted a two-month exercise to update the electoral rolls for 2014 general elections.
The number of such people is minuscule considering that 814 million people in India would be eligible to vote in this elections, which is about a 100 million more than numbers in 2009.
Declaring figures of transgender voters is a big leap considering that a members of the transgender community are usually unwilling to disclose their sexual preference to a government agency or government officials.
