Editor held on defamation charges in Gujarat

The editor has allegedly used abusive words against Gujarat CM and the district administration in his article.

The editor of a Gujarati eveninger published from Surat was arrested on charges of defamation and "using abusive language" in his edit piece.

"The editor was arrested on Tuesday under various sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) including 124 (a) for attempting to create hatred and contempt for the government, established by law", Surat Police Commissioner Sudhir Sinha told the agency.

The accused has allegedly also used abusive words against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and district administration in his editorial published on Monday, blaming the government for the recent flood and 'failure' to provide proper relief and rehabilitation, Sinha said.
