Educational Trust fined Rs 25,000
Chetana Trust is the first trust to be slapped with maximum fine under RTI, reports Chitrangada Choudhury.
The Information Commission in an order on Tuesday has fined the Chetana Trust that runs the Chetana college in Bandra Rs 25,000 for not giving information on RTI with a delay of over a year. This marks the first case in the state of a trust being penalised the maximum fine under RTI.
Current trustee Shankar Adivarekar (86) had filed the application last December, asking for details of the trust accounts, and how it spent its funds. He said, "There is mismanagement of funds. Despite me being the trustee, they denied me the information. Hence I had to resort to RTI."
State Information Commissioner Suresh Joshi who has slapped the fine said, "Two and a half months ago, in a hearing, the trust officials orally committed to giving the information. But they didn’t. I slated another hearing for December 27, but they did not turn up, revealing their inclination to withhold information. So I have ruled on Tuesday for a fine of Rs 25,000 to be imposed on the PIO of the trust."
