The tussle between the Congress and the BJP to appropriate the legacy of Jawaharlal Nehru intensified on Tuesday with Rahul Gandhi claiming that efforts were on to erase him from history and his party accusing the Narendra Modi government of “creating obstacles” in organising the global conference on the country’s first Prime Minister.

Addressing the meet which concluded with the adoption of a declaration, Rahul said Nehru’s ideas and politics were very much relevant today and called for serious efforts to check any move to rub him out and erase his legacy.

Inaugurating the conference on Monday, Congress president Sonia Gandhi flagged concerns over “misrepresentation and distortion” of Nehru’s ideas and winding up the meet on Tuesday stressed the need to adhere to Nehruvian concepts of democracy, secularism and inclusiveness.

Her party leader Anand Sharma too alleged that the BJP-led NDA government tried to sabotage the conference, saying “We were denied the venue Vigyan Bhavan on November 14 (Nehru’s birth anniversary) when it was not being used (by anybody).”
