In a tragic incident, eight people died and five others were injured after a Mahindra Bolero SUV was hit by a mini truck in Mehandipur, near Bilaspur, on NH-8 on Monday night. According to the police, the speeding truck hit the road divider and then collided head-on with the SUV.
All the deceased, passengers of the Bolero, were returning to Delhi from a Balaji temple in Rajasthan.
According to the police, both vehicles were coming at a high speed when the accident took place. Six persons died on the spot and two other lost their lives in hospital during treatment.
The injured were rushed to a nearby private hospital, said Babu Lal, SHO of the Bilaspur police station.
There were a total 13 passengers in the SUV, of which eight died while five were injured. The deceased were identified as Kanta Devi (50), Mohit (17), Sandeep (28), Dikshant (5), Raju (47), Sultan (28) and Dev Kishore (47), Rajesh (42).
The injured were identified as Abhilasha (20), Monika (25), Jagbir (21), Pradeep (35) and Parul. The condition of Monika and Pradeep are said to critical, said a senior police official. Six of the deceased were residents of Najafgarh in Delhi.
The police suspect the truck driver was under the influence of alcohol and lost control as a liquor bottle has been recovered from the vehicle.
An FIR has been lodged against the unidentified truck driver who fled the spot after the accident. Probe is on.
