The police in the mining town of Kothagudem in Khammam district have arrested eight auto rickshaw drivers for raping a college student and then circulating the sexually explicit pictures captured in their camera phones to their friends and others in the district.
The police galvanised into action soon after the girl, a final year graduate student, walked into the police station on Sunday and lodged a complaint saying that the rapists were threatening her using some MMS clips.
The girl in her complaint stated that she was waylaid by two auto drivers while returning home from college on February 17, 2007. Instead of taking her home, the two men drove took her to the outskirts of the town and raped her. The two also invited six of their colleagues who raped her too. Later they dropped her home and warned her not to reveal it to anyone as she was still bleeding.
The girl, whose identity police is not willing to reveal for now, on reaching home told her parents of the ordeal. But her family chose to keep it a secret fearing social stigma and subsequent problem in getting her married.
Further, the two men, allegedly made tapes of the clips and started circulating them. For past few months they had been harassing her to meet their sexual demands, failing which they threatened to send the tapes to her family and relatives.
The girl decided not to take it anymore. Despite family’s opposition, she filed a police complaint. She said she was emboldened by the recent police action on perpetrators of sexual offences.
