Eight police personnel, including a sub-inspector, were suspended for allegedly beating up BJP MLA Rajkumar in Dehra Dun on Sunday night.

The suspended police personnel have been sent to lines, Dehra Dun Senior Superintendent of Police Abhinav Kumar said.

The action against the police personnel of Premnagar police post was taken after they were booked under sections 147 (punishment for rioting), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC following a complaint by Rajkumar, MLA from Sahaspur constituency.

The incident occurred when Rajkumar's vehicle was stopped by the police in view of a traffic snarl after a road accident in Premnagar area on Sunday night. This led to heated arguments between police personnel and Rajkumar.

Police then dragged Rajkumar out of the vehicle and allegedly began beating him up. Later, they brought him to the Premnagar police post.

A large number of party workers and some MLAs also gathered at the police post and damaged furniture and destroyed files, police said.

Senior police officials reached the spot and defused the tension.
