Undeterred by their age, a 70-year-old couple showed courage and foiled a robbery attempt at their house in Vasundhara Sector 1 of Ghaziabad on Monday. Their presence of mind and timely reporting of the incident also helped the police to catch one of the robbers.
The incident occurred at the house of RBN Maurya, a retired senior section engineer of the Indian Railways, around 11.30 am when three of the contract labourers, working for flooring and tiling of the house, attempted a robbery when Maurya and his wife, Ram Vati Maurya, were alone at the house.
The couple, both over 70 years of age, was overpowered by the three men. Maurya was locked up on the first floor of the house while his wife was locked on the ground floor inside a bathroom. "When the two men on the ground floor pushed her inside a room, she put forward her hand between the door and the wall. This left the door open and she raised an alert. Hearing her voice, neighbours gathered outside the house," senior superintendent of police Raghubir Lal said.
Hearing his wife's voice, Maurya immediately called up his son from his mobile phone who called up the police and within minutes the PCR vans arrived at the spot. One of the robbers, who was trying to escape, was nabbed. Two others are absconding and police have dispatched teams to catch them. A case of attempt to robbery was registered at Indirapuram police station.
