Nine lady schoolteachers from Rajkot and two others accompanying them drowned in the Arabian Sea near Chorwad in Junagadh district of Gujarat at 2.30 in the afternoon on Friday.
A group of 30 teachers, along with two drivers and one peon from Genius School in Rajkot, around 160 km from here, went for a meeting in Sharda Gram, an associate institution, in Mangrol, a coastal town in Junagadh district.
During lunchtime, the teachers accompanied by two male colleagues from Sharda Gram went to the Chorwad Holiday Camp on the seashore.
“Fifteen of these teachers were standing on rocks when a powerful wave pulled them into the sea. While the fishermen managed to fish out six of them, nine were drowned,” Sub-inspector N.B. Joshi of the Chorwad police station told HT over the phone.
Chorwad, birthplace of industrialist Dhirubhai Ambani, is a popular tourist location in the area.
“The sea here is very rough right now and it seems that these women, all aged between 18 and 25, may have gone a bit far,” DSP Mahinder Pawar said. The bodies have been sent for postmortem.
The school’s trustee Jitu Kothari said their teaching staff had gone to Chorwad and were scheduled to go to Somnath temple too.
