An encounter between militants and security forces has started in a remote Handwara village on Monday morning in Kashmir's frontier district in north Kashmir.
Reports said militants and security forces are exchanging gunshots in Malik Pora Ramhaal village in the area.
According to the police spokesman the operation is being jointly conducted by army (6RR) and police.
Sources said the operation was conducted following a tip off about the presence of militants in the house of one Habibullah Sheikh.
When police party approached the house they were fired upon by the militants which led to gunbattle. A top Let commander is believed to be trapped.
On a specific information regarding presence of militants, a search operation was launched at Malikpora, in the jurisdiction of police station Vilgam, Handwara by police and army's 6RR. The cordon and search operation turned into an encounter as the joint operation party was fired upon. The encounter is going on and further details are awaited, said a police spokesman.
