A 32-year-old computer engineer after beating his wife to death with a cricket bat, committed suicide at the railway tracks in Ghaziabad on Saturday, the police said.

The deceased engineer, Nitin Sharma (32), allegedly had an altercation with his 28-year-old wife Vijay Laxmi Sharma at their flat in Vasundhara sector 5 in Ghaziabad. It was during this that he beat his wife with a cricket bat which led to her death due to excessive bleeding and injuries, police officials stated.

The couple were married for four years and were residents of Meerut district in western Uttar Pradesh. They had shifted to Vasundhara due to the husband's job. He was employed with a reputed multinational firm in Noida. The couple is survived by a three-year-old son.

The police sources said the couple had gone to Shirdi last week where they picked up a fight and had returned home a day before the incident.

"After beating his wife to death, the husband locked the flat and took his child to his sister's residence at Shalimar Garden," Indirapuram SHO inspector Rajesh Dwivedi said.

After leaving his son, Sharma allegedly went to the railway tracks near Arthala, adjoining Vasundhara area, and committed suicide by jumping before a passing train, police said.

"We have sent both the bodies for post-mortem and their relatives have been informed at Meerut. Their neighbours say the woman could have been killed because of a fight between thw two," Dwivedi said.
