Engineer shot dead by militants over money

An assistant engineer of Manipur Public Works Department (PWD) was shot dead by militants in front of his wife and daughters in Bishenpur District, official sources said on Tuesday.

Sources said two militants gunned down Keisam Nabachandra (48) when he stepped out of his car at the gate of his housh at Utlou area, about 35 KMS South of here, at about 8.10 pm on Monday.

His wife and two children, who were returning home along with the victim after visiting a temple on the occasion of the birthday of the twin daughters, watched the shocking incident, sources said.

Sources said Nabachandra was taken to Regional Institute of Madical Science and Hospital (RIMSH) here but he succumed to injuries before reaching RIMSH.

Militant outfit Kangleipak Communist party (KCP-city meitei) claimed responsibility for the incident and said it was a warning to the PWD with which they had "disagreement".

PWD sources said the outfit had demanded a hugh sum of money which the department could not meet.
