Guards at an engineering college on NH-24 shot dead an alleged robber on Sunday. The deceased, Mukesh Kumar, 20, was part of a gang of robbers that had entered the complex to rob students, police said. The incident occurred around 2 am on Sunday when guards at Lord Krishna Engineering College spotted the intruders entering the college.

“When we challenged the intruders, they opened fire at us. In return, we shot at them. One shot killed a robber,” said guard Subhash Singh, 50.

College officials said earlier, too, there were several unsuccessful robbery attempts at the campus. “The robbers had intended to rob the students of their laptops, mobiles and cash,” college registrar Ashok Tyagi said. Kumar was a resident of Jewar area of Gautam Budha Nagar district.

“He had come to attend a marriage at Pilkhuwa on November 24 and hadn’t returned,” Kumar’s uncle Rajendra Kumar said. The two guards are being questioned. A case under section 307 of IPC has been lodged against the deceased.
