The Englishmen have never really made as great an impact as their women on the international scene and their best performance remains a second-placed finish, as hosts, to Australia in 1986.

Though they have played in nine World Cups so far, England have never really managed to achieve great heights.

However, their recent performance at the World Cup qualifiers — where they topped their pool and then shocked Pakistan to finish third — may suggest there could be a better performance in store from them this time around.

Captain and defender Brett Garrard and penalty corner specialist Ben Hawes have honed their skills in the competitive Dutch league, while the Mantell brothers — Richard and Simon — would be quite handful in scoring goals off set-pieces and otherwise.
