Etawah continued to simmer on Thursday with Samajwadi Party workers going on the rampage.

A mob ransacked Saifai police station and pelted the Etawah railway station building with stones. Police had to fire in the air in Ashok Nagar where SP workers clashed with the men in khaki. Nearly a dozen party workers have been arrested for damaging police vehicles and a state transport corporation bus.

Tension between the SP and the ruling BSP worsened with SP general secretary Amar Singh alleging that the Uttar Pradesh government is "hatching a conspiracy to eliminate" its top leadership. "Mayawati, with the help of state police chief Vikram Singh and additional director general of police Brijlal, wants to eliminate Mulayam, Shivpal Singh Yadav, Akhilesh Yadav and me," he said.
