Eunuch, entire family in Vidarbha local poll fray

Some of the eleven districts in Vidarbha are all set to witness some very interesting contests, reports Pradip Kumar Maitra.

With almost an entire family plus a firebrand eunuch thrown in for good measure, some of the eleven districts barring Nagpur in Vidarbha, which is gearing up for the ensuing local-self government (urban) elections, is all set to witness some very interesting contests!

Members of an entire family—the present councillor of Chandrapur Municipality, Dhanraj Sawarkar, his wife, Laxmi and daughter, Dr Kirit Savarkar are contesting the elections as independents.

NCP nominee, Raju Krishnapurkar and wife Rajshree, are fighting from two separate wards in Chandrapur.

Dhanraj Sawarkar is contesting from Raitwari ward while wife Laxmi, is contesting from the Industrial Ward and daughter Dr Kirti from Colliery ward in the industrial city of Chandrapur for the ensuing municipality elections, slated on November 19.

The NCP nominee, Raju is contesting from Normal School ward while his wife Rajshree is contesting from Mahadeo Mandir ward in the same municipality. Both were given the NCP nominations.

This is probably the first time in the city that three members of a family—head of the family, his wife and daughter—are contesting any elections while the husband-wife duo are contesting from two separate wards.

Similarly, former controversial chairman of neighbouring Ballarpur Municipality, Sunanda Atram, presently in jail on the charge of murdering her colleague in the municipality, Dr Vijay Wadaskar, is also in the fray.

Atram, once a senior Congress leader, is contesting as an independent as the party had refused to nominate her.

However, all eyes are on Washim municipality—gender-wise. Firebrand and popular Gulabo alias Chandni, a city eunuch, has filed nomination from ward no 14.

Gulabo the undisputed leader of eunuchs in the area says, "The male and female corporators who were elected in the municipality for years, have miserably failed to develop the city. That's why I've decided to contest to ensure the overall development of the city."

Justifying her desire to jump into the poll fray, she pointed out that eunuchs like Shobha Nehru of Hissar in Haryana and Shabnam Mausi of Madhya Pradesh have done outstanding work in their respective municipality and Assembly segments.

Nobody has raised a finger on them for corruption or for that matter nepotism, said Gulabo vehemently, while claiming to maintain tradition if victorious.

Gulabo, who has passed SSC examination from Karanja in Akola district, informed that hundreds of eunuchs from Hyderabad, Mumbai, Akola and neighbouring areas would come for campaigning.

If Gulabo wins, it would be the first time in Maharashtra that a eunuch is elected as a peoples' representative of those very people who till date, had refused to even acknowledge their social status in the community.

In another interesting development, the controversial Congressman, Amit Dixit, who published an advertisement on behalf of liquor lobby to congratulate PCC chief Prabha Rau and her new working committee, was given an official nomination from Vaishnavi Ward in Chandrapur despite widespread opposition.

Meanwhile, the ruling Congress is facing an embarrassing situation in Daryapur Municipality where almost all political leaders have ganged up against the new comer in the century-old party, Prakash Bharsakale, a protégé of Maharashtra Revenue minister, Narayan Rane.

They have floated, Nagarik Aghadi against Bharshakale who ruled the Daryapur Municipality for almost 15 years.
