Branded with the "loose character" tag by parents of boys who eve-teased her, a teenaged girl from Begusarai district allegedly committed suicide unable to bear the brunt, police said on Friday.
The 17-year-old girl was eve-teased by a group of five boys on January 13 on her way to home, they said.
Surendra Singh, father of the victim, placed the matter before the gram panchayat the following day, but it could not take any decision against the accused. Instead, the parents of the accused charged the girl of having loose character, Balia DSP Mohammed Qasim said.
Unable to bear the brunt, the girl, an intermediate student of a local college, committed suicide by consuming poison in Samastipur village late on Thursday night, Qasim said.
The girl was a meritorious student and had won several medals in various sporting events at district level, the DSP said, adding that the family members of the girl have lodged an FIR against the five eve-teasers.
