Even Kapil Sibal’s arguments could not secure bail for transport and and sports minister Madan Mitra.
The division bench of Calcutta High Court comprising of Justice Nishita Matre and Justice Asha Arora rejected Mitra’s bail plea on Thursday in a packed courtroom after hours of argument.
Mitra was arrested on December 9 last year in connection with Sharadha chit fund scam and since then shuttled from Alipore central jail and special cabin of SSKM hospital. It was over a dozen times that courts rejected Mitra’s bail plea. Previously Mitra approached lower courts for securing bail, but failed to get relief.
Kapil Sibal who spoke for nearly an hour, argued that certain sections slapped by CBI against Mitra is not applicable. He further argued that Mitra is willing to resign as minister and ready to accept any condition set up the court for his bail. He also stated that he never tried to influence the witnesses.
However, CBI counsel K Ragavacharyulu however argued that Mitra is get bail will definitely try and influence witness at a time when new witnesses are coming up. He also highlighted agitations inside the courtroom after Mitra’s arrest. The CBI counsel highlighted that after spending a few days in jail Mitra spent much time at SSKM hospital inside VIP cabin.
There was commotion and pandemonium inside the court room since morning which delayed the hearing of the case on Thursday at HC.
Meanwhile, state Congress leaders expressed their unhappiness with Sibal, who is a senior Congress leader apart from an advocate pleading for scam tainted Mitra.
