The former member of parliament from Satna, Sukhlal Kushwaha (51), committed suicide by shooting himself in the head, police said on Friday evening.
Kushwaha had a bullet injury on his forehead and prime facie it looked a case of suicide, police said.
He was rushed to the local hospital where doctors declared he was brought dead. The immediate reason for his alleged suicide was not known. Police said they were investigating the matter.
Kushwaha was elected as an MP in 1996 on a Bahujan Samaj Party ticket from the Satna Lok Sabha seat when he defeated veteran Congress leader Arjun Singh. Last year, he joined the Samajwadi Party.
His post-mortem will be done at the district hospital and his last rites will be performed on Saturday, family sources said.
