Gujarat police on Thursday arrested a former IAS officer Sanjay Gupta for alleged financial irregularities of Rs 113.22 crore in Metro-link Express for Gandhinagar-Ahmedabad (MEGA), a state government company which is executing metro rail project between the two cities. Gupta was chairman of the MEGA company and during his tenure, alleged irregularities were committed.
“We have arrested him based on a complaint given by the MEGA. The complaint has given details of irregularities to the tune of over Rs 100 crore,” Gujarat DGP PC Thakur said, adding, “The CID (crime) is probing the case.”
“During our inquiry, we found irregularities and corruption in various contracts given by MEGA during Sanjay Gupta’s tenure so we had filed an FIR with the CID (crime) in connection with the irregularities,” said MD of MEGA IP Gautam, also a former IAS officer.
The former IAS officer of 1985 batch, Gupta had resigned from the service in 2002 and had joined Gujarat-based Adani group as Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Subsequently, he had quit the Adani group to start his own hotel and resort business under the brand name of Cambay hotels.
Besides hospitality, Gupta had also ventured into the media business. In Gujarat bureaucracy, Gupta was known as a high profile bureaucrat who once served as secretary to the former CM Chimanbhai Patel. He was very influential during the tenure of Keshubhai Patel.
