Former Jharkhand chief minister Madhu Koda on Monday asked a special court to summon former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and two others as accused in a coal scam case in which the CBI had chargesheeted him along with industrialist Naveen Jindal and others.

Koda sought Singh’s summoning on the grounds that the ex-PM had also held the portfolio of coal minister during the requisite period. He also filed an application seeking summoning of Anand Swarup, then secretary (energy) and former mines and geology secretary Jai Shankar Tiwari.

Special Judge Bharat Parashar directed the CBI to reply on the pleas. The court then fixed August 28 for scrutiny of documents supplied to the accused by the CBI along with its chargesheet.

During the hearing of the case against Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL) and Gagan Sponge Iron Pvt Ltd (GSIPL), Koda’s counsel told the court that the arguments on the application be heard along with arguments on framing of charges in the case.

The case pertains to alleged irregularities in allocation of Amarkonda Murgadangal coal block in Jharkhand to the two Jindal group firms. Besides the businessman and Koda, court had earlier summoned former minister of state for coal Dasari Narayan Rao, ex-coal secretary HC Gupta and Rajeev Jain, director of Jindal Realty Pvt Ltd, Girish Kumar Suneja and Radha Krishna Saraf, directors of GSIPL, Suresh Singhal, director of New Delhi Exim Pvt Ltd among others.
