A retired judge, his wife and son have been arrested for the attempted murder of their 23-year-old pregnant domestic help.

The victim has been working at the Bhubaneswar home of Samir Kumar Ray, who was an additional district judge of Kalahandi, for five years.

On Tuesday, morning walkers found the woman stuck in the iron girders under Cuttack’s Jobra Anicut bridge over Mahanadi river, about 30 km from Bhubaneswar. Her condition is critical, said doctors at the SCB Medical College.

The woman has lodged a complaint, accusing the judge and his family of trying to murder her. “We found prima facie evidence that they hired contract killers for R3 lakh,” said S Pravin Kumar, DCP, Cuttack.

Claiming to be married to Ray’s 26-year-old son Satyabrata, the woman told the police that recently, the family had arranged his marriage elsewhere and tried to force her to abort her child. “When I resisted, they planned to kill me.”

On Monday night, she was abducted by four men from the judge’s house, an officer said. They beat her up and took her by car to the bridge. Tying her hands and legs, they threw her off the bridge, but she got stuck in the iron girders.

The Ray family claims the woman was blackmailing them. They told the police that a man, claiming to be her husband, had taken her away on Monday.
