Veteran leader of backward communities and former Karnataka chief minister Sarekoppa Bangarappa (79) passed away on Monday following a brief illness.

He was suffering from kidney related problems. The last rites would be held in his village Shimoga district on Tuesday.

Bangarappa's political life was colorful and controversial. He entered politics as a socialist in 1967 and was a known party hopper, who had quit the Congress five times only to rejoin it.

In between, he floated three regional parties and joined the Samajwadi Party and the BJP.

He was Lok Sabha member for three terms and the chief minister from 1990 to 1992 from Congress (I). Lately, he had joined JD(S), headed by former prime minister HD Devegowda.
