Madhya Pradesh’ ex-finance minister Raghavji (79) who is facing sodomy charges levelled by his 29-year-old domestic help was arrested from a flat in Bhopal on Tuesday afternoon, a couple of hours before the district court Bhopal was to hear his application for anticipatory bail.
Raghavji was found in a flat in Rashiprabha Apartment in Kohefiza locality; it was locked from outside.
On a tip-off a police team reached the flat, broke the lock and arrested the ex-finance minister.
His wife Heera Ben and a relative were present in the flat when the arrest was made. Given the high-profile case the police team video graphed the entire proceedings.
Immediately after his arrest he was taken to Habibgang police station where a large number of media persons and others gathered on coming to know about the arrest. A heavy police force was deployed at the police station.
Clad in white shirt and trouser he went inside the police station without talking to media persons.
Interestingly, Raghavji was present as one of the guests from the government in the capacity of finance minister when the building of the police station had been inaugurated by chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
Notably, his domestic help, Rajkumar Dangi, filed a complaint with Habibganj police station on Thursday evening in the form of an affidavit accusing the minister, his other domestic help Sher Singh Chauhan and the latter’s brother-in-law Suresh Chauhan of sexually exploiting him for more than three years.
The formal FIR was lodged on Sunday.
The victim also submitted a CD as evidence to corroborate his charges. The ex-minister is seen in the CD committing the act.
Raghavji celebrated his birthday on Sunday at his hometown Vidisha, hours before he was expelled from the BJP, with hundreds of his followers. He had already been dropped from the state cabinet on Friday. He left for Bhopal in the evening announcing that he would attend the state assembly’s monsoon session to begin on Monday.
However, his location was untraceable as he went underground when he reached near Bhopal.
As police got a go-ahead from the government for his arrest, they launched a manhunt to nab Raghavji on Sunday night itself. Through his lawyer he filed an application in the district court, Bhopal for anticipatory bail, on Monday.
The diseases he is allegedly suffering from include diabetes, blood pressure and heart ailment.
However, the ex-minister was not present in the court. He did not attend the assembly’s monsoon session either.
Talking to media persons city superintendent of police (city north) Arvind Saxena said the police teams were looking for him and he was arrested from the flat on a tip-off.
Now, investigating officer would interrogate him and would decide about the future course of action.
Saxena added the ownership of the flat was still not clear. It was said to be of Raghavji's relative Vivek Saonla, who was present in the flat when Raghavji was arrested.
Police are searching for the two other accused also.
