The Congress has tried to drive a wedge in the BJP on L.K. Advani’s disclosure on Kandahar hijacking.
The party has asked former PM A.B. Vajpayee and his colleague Jaswant Singh to clarify that Advani did not know the then foreign minister would escort terrorists to Kandahar to secure the release of passengers of a hijacked aircraft. “The two should explain,’’ said AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh while Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi raised the issue at the meeting of the party’s publicity committee on Monday.
AICC spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters the incident spoke volumes of the efficacy of the Vajpayee cabinet in which his home minister did not know of such significant developments. He also attacked Advani for his alleged “hypocrisy’’ of reaching out and presenting a copy of his autobiography My Country, My Life to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.
The Congress intends to come out with a booklet to nail the BJP on the issue. A similar exercise is on with regard to price rise by comparing its trends during the UPA and NDA regimes and outlining the ruling coalition’s pro-farmer and pro-people steps to cushion its impact.
