Families of those who died with Rajiv seek answers

The Tamil Nadu government’s decision to free the convicted killers of former PM Rajiv Gandhi has come as a shock to the kin of the 16 policemen who died along with him when a powerful human bomb exploded in Sriperumbudur on May 21, 1991. After fighting for years to get justice, the thought of watching the convicts walk free is making them feel betrayed.

Javed Iqbal is one of them. His father, TKS Mohammed Iqbal serving as DSP Kancheepuram had accompanied Rajiv to the meeting venue.

“All these years no one bothered to check in on the plight of the families of the policemen killed along with Rajiv Gandhi. Several human rights activists fought for the convicts instead,” a bitter Javed told Hindustan Times.

“We had held protests in the past to ensure the convicts were send to the gallows, but in vain,” he said.

“We are now trying to see if we can legally stop the release of the convicts,” he said.

“But my advocate says legally nothing can be done now,” Javed said almost choking.

“We will still go to Delhi and meet Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and ask what are they going to do for the affected families of those policemen killed along with our former PM. Several people are suffering. What is the government doing for them,” he said

“I will coordinate with the rest of the families and plan something, book the tickets and meet them. Because of your dad, (Rajiv Gandhi) my father died. What have you done for us? I will ask Rahul,” said Javed.
