Farmers oppose high local tax on jaggery

The state government refused to grant jaggery farmers a subsidy on their produce but has allowed the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) to levy a 7% local tax on farmers.

However, the local tax being levied is much more than the previous octroi.

Hence, farmers, merchants and the agriculture produce market committee in Kolhapur have decided not to resort to the auction system in protest against the KMC’s exorbitant local tax.
The protest has increased the stock of unsold jaggery stock held by the market committee.
