Farmers protest

Farmers belonging to the Jamhuri Kisan Sabha and the Border Area Kisan Sangarsh Committee held a dharna on Wednesday outside the office of the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) to protest against what they termed as erratic power supply to the tubewells.

Kisan leader, Dr Satnam Singh Ajnala, said that Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd (PSPCL) has gone back on its promise of supplying eighthour uninterrupted electricity to tubewells. At present, none of the areas in the border district of Amritsar is getting the promised power supply, he claimed while addressing those who participated in the dharna.

The farmers of different villages claimed that most of the areas do not get more than six hours of supply to tubewells.

Ajnala said that PSPCL is violating the state government’s standing orders by supplying power to tubewells in the border belt during the night hours. The government had clearly stated that tubewells in the border belt will be given power supply during the day, owing to restricted movement of civilians during the period between dusk to dawn.

However, PSPCL is persisting with its rotation pattern of power supply to tubewells even in the border areas, he said.
