Claiming that Madhur Bhandarkar based one of the characters in his film Fashion on former model Geetanjali Nagpal, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) summoned the director on Monday.
“I found several media reports quoting Kangana Ranaut as saying that she plays a character named Gitu, which is based on Geetanjali Nagpal,” said DCW chairman Barkha Singh.
The promos of Fashion show Kangana Ranaut’s character as a mentally disturbed model, sitting alone with a cigarette in her hand. Such scenes have led the commission to allege that Ranaut’s character is based on Nagpal.
However, Bhandarkar refuted the charges and said models falling prey to drug addiction is a common occurrence in the fashion industry and several models like Shivani Kapur and Kate Moss have experienced it.
He said the character concerned is named Sonali Gujral who is a supermodel from Mumbai. “Geetanjali was never a supermodel,” he said.
Bhandarkar said Ranaut denied making any statement that her character was based on Nagpal and any alleged statement if given was in her personal capacity. He further stated he has given a disclaimer at the beginning of the film that it is a work of fiction.
Bhandarkar said he held government bodies in great respect and would meet the DCW’s request. "I will screen the movie before them this Thursday," he said.
“We are satisfied,” said Barkha Singh, “But if we find any resemblance in the film, we will take action,” she added. However, Fashion is due to release on Wednesday.
