Convenience food and quick-fix meals are creating a generation of obese, overweight and lazy children in the National Capital Region, says a study. According to a survey conducted by Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, more than 23 per cent of children belonging to well-to-do families are obese.

In a sample size of 1000 students from schools in Delhi, Noida and Faridabad, it was found that 23 per cent children were overweight while 17 per cent were hypertensive.

“Eating fast food and snacks that are high in sugar, fat and calories with too little physical activity is making our children overweight. With mothers addicted to television, it is difficult to make the child go out and play,” said Dr RN Srivastav, Senior Consultant, Paediatrics, Apollo Hospital.

“Children will not go on a diet by themselves, so the family will have to diet with them and motivate the children,” added Srivastav. Doctors are also suggesting collaboration between schools and hospitals to educate children and parents.

“School canteens should not ideally provide beverages and fast food,” Srivastava added.
