Fate pushes reluctant captains in leadership roles

As the Delhi Daredevils take on the Rajasthan Royals, the two teams are led by players who share the same cricket DNA.

As the Delhi Daredevils take on the Rajasthan Royals, the two teams are led by players who share the same cricket DNA.

Rahul Dravid and Mahela Jayawardane are outstanding players, skilled slip fielders, giants of modern cricket, who represent the best traditions of the game.

These two high-quality performers have made big runs in all conditions and attained statesmanlike stature in contemporary cricket. Both are universally respected for being professional, focussed and self driven.

Known for their calm strength and poise, the news is these two are a rare breed of high achieving yet disarmingly modest celebrities who will always say and do the right thing. For any youngster starting a journey in cricket, there are no better role models than these two stalwarts.

Dravid and Mahela share another distinction --- of being reluctant captains --- both relinquished captaincy of their national sides midway through their careers.

Dravid left in mysterious circumstances without explaining his decision, except for a brief (and unsatisfactory) statement about not enjoying the game.
