Three sisters, the eldest of whom is three years old, were allegedly abandoned by their father at the Jammu railway station last Friday.

The police said Ram Paul, a rikshaw puller, abandoned his children as he was unable to look after them following his wife deserting the family after developing a relationship with another man. Paul, who hails from Allahabad, has been detained by the police.

The children were noticed by a sweeper, Gurdev Singh, near the reservation counter at the railway station. He provided them food and shelter. On Sunday, the police came to know of their plight and contacted several NGOs to help the girls.

The police have shifted the girls to an SOS home.

The state government has directed the social welfare department and the chief medical officer of Jammu to form a committee to look after the girls.
