A day after the Supreme Court denied bail to his daughter, DMK chief and former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi (88) visited Tihar jail on Tuesday evening to comfort Rajya Sabha member Kanimozhi.
Kanimozhi, chargesheeted by the CBI for her alleged involvement in the 2G spectrum scam case, is lodged at Tihar’s sub-jail number six that is reserved for women inmates since May 20.
On May 23, Karunanidhi had met Kanimozhi for the first time after a designated court remanded her to judicial custody.
With Kanimozhi struggling to brace up for a longer stay in her cell than she might have earlier expected, Karunanidhi met her on Tuesday for around 20 minutes to offer solace.
Karunanidhi came with what are dear to his visibly glum daughter — her mother Rajathiammal, a salted snack popular in Chennai, and her elder brother MK Alagiri — who is Union minister for chemicals and fertilizers.
Karunanidhi, Rajathiammal and Alagiri met Kanimozhi inside the deputy jail superintendent’s cabin with jail officials and guards standing several feet away outside at around 5pm.
“Kanimozhi and her family members were talking animatedly in Tamil. Her parents could be seen wiping their eyes, Kanimozhi was visibly emotional too…It seemed a moving family reunion,” said a jail source.
According to the source, Kanimozhi shared with a few inmates and jail officials the fact that she had been “very hopeful of the SC granting her bail.” He added, “But with the SC denying the bail, she is currently feeling low and considering whatever legal options are now left to her.” The jail authorities have shifted her to a bigger cell that is next to rooms occupied by the jail staff as a “security measure,” said another jail source.
After meeting Kanimozhi, Karunanidhi also met former telecom minister A Raja and Kalaignar TV’s managing director Sharad Kumar.
