“I have committed murders. I don’t want to live. I want to die,” Ravindra Verma told Hindustan Times on Monday lying on the hospital bed.
Verma, a 37-year-old truck driver, allegedly killed his five children — three daughters and two sons — with a grinding stone on Sunday night.
He also allegedly critically injured his wife before trying to commit suicide by slashing his wrist.
The murders came to light at 6 am on Monday when Verma’s parents, who live in the area, came down to Verma’s house in Rozy Colony in Vijaynagar, Ghaziabad.
They reportedly informed the police when no one answered the door.
“When we broke open the door, we found Verma, his wife and their nine-month-old child in a pool of blood in the front room,” said DC Tiwary, station officer of Vijaynagar. “The other four children had succumbed to injuries in the second room.”
Inspector General (Meerut Zone) Gurbachan Lal said Verma first hit his elder daughter with a grinding stone and then killed the children one by one.
“He later hit his wife, critically injuring her and slashed his wrist with a sharp weapon to commit suicide,” said the IG.
Verma’s family told the police that, two years ago, Verma had killed his two-month-old daughter.
“He smashed the head of the two-month-old girl. We came to know about this later but decided not to talk about it,” said Amit Verma, Verma’s younger brother, to HT. “It was our mistake to hide this fact from the police.”
According family members, Verma was violent by nature and was suffering from depression.
He also reportedly changed jobs frequently.
“Like a maniac, he used to beat us at the slightest provocation,” said Amit. “He has tried to kill family members at least thrice in the past.”
The family has also denied that Verma killed his children because of financial crunch.
He had applied for a visa for a job in Dubai, they said.
Police have recovered the iron rod with bloodstain, which was allegedly used in the crime.
Police said Verma had planned the murders and had brought home two razor blades on Sunday evening, which he used to injure
Verma’s wife Durgawati Verma (35) was transferred to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in Delhi.
Doctors said she was in coma because of two critical head injuries.
The five children killed were Anjali Verma (14), Preeti Verma (12), Mona Verma (10), Devraj Verma (5) and Lucky Verma (9 months).
They were studying in classes VI, V, IV, I, respectively.
The police arrested Verma and took him to MMG Hospital at Ghaziabad for treatment.
“He is out of danger and has confessed to the crime,” said the IG said.
Chief Medical Superintendent at MMG Hospital YC Gupta said the murders were probably committed between 12 midnight and 1 am.
Since neighbours said they did not hear cries at night, the police have not rule out the possibility of the victims being under the influence of some toxic substance.
“We have sent the food samples, which they consumed last night, for tests,” said the IG.
The children were cremated on Monday evening after post mortem. The family originally hails from Siwan district in Bihar.
