Incredible it may sound but a drunkard father sold off his two minor daughters, aged ten and 12, for money.
It is alleged that Harbhajan Lal, a resident of Simara in Khurja district used to force his daughters to offer their bodies to men. But the girls would refuse to fulfil his wishes despite abuses and torture.
Harbhajan then decided to marry off the two girls to men much older than them for money. It is learnt that Harbhajan married the girls for a mere Rs. 10,000 to a resident of Kenauni.
The mother of the minor girls had died eight years ago.
The girls were however, rescued by their aunt Kamlesh. On hearing the news of sell-off, she reached Simara and asked the local people to stop the group of people who were forcibly taking the girls in a car. Some helpful people created roadblocks to stop the speeding car. The 'grooms' even attempted to rape them in the car but soon the irate crowd forcibly took custody of the weeping girls.
The crowd then marched to Harbhajan's house and beat him up with shoes and slippers. His face was drenched in a slush and excreta was also thrown on him.
He was taken into custody by the Ahmadgarh police under Child Marriage (Prevention) Act.
The police is now searching for the two men who had bought the girls.
