Everyone believed 16-year-old SSC student Bhavi Desai jumped off her building terrace on Monday because she was ashamed to have been caught cheating in the exam.

A day later, however, investigators suspect the Ghatkopar resident took such a drastic step because she did badly in the Geography paper and was afraid she would flunk.

After completing her exam at 1 pm, instead of returning to her third floor home at Sareena Apartments in Garodia Nagar, Desai had gone to the building terrace and leaped to death.

P. Patil, police inspector (crime) from Pant Nagar police station, said they had initially suspected that Desai had been caught with a chit during the exams and had been afraid of facing her parents as the principal had asked her to get them to the exam centre the next day.

“But the principal, teachers from the school and Desai’s classmates said she was caught by the invigilator 15 minutes before the exam started,” said Patil. “The principal confiscated her hall ticket but she was asked to collect it after the exam and there were no other consequences. She had not been asked to get her parents to school.”

Patil now believes the Pune Vidya Bhavan student killed herself because she had done badly in the exam.

“It looks like Desai took the step because she was depressed that she would not fare well in her exams as she was not prepared. After getting caught she must have felt she will fail and committed suicide,” he said.
