Feng Shui helps filmmaker

Can Feng Shui change luck in the world of glamour? Mohan Deep has the answer.

Mohan Deep

Like I promised in my last article, here is a true account of the Feng Shui impact on the creativity, business and commercial success in the life of a great film maker who I will not name to avoid embarrassment all around.

The main reason I am writing about this film maker is that it took a longer for Feng Shui impact in this case, as compared with most others who have chosen the Feng Shui way. Occasionally, I get people who are impatient for the Feng Shui impact…and this piece is for them.

It has taken close to three years but, as it always happens, it began during the first lunar month after doing Feng Shui changes. He has had two super hits during the last two years and hopefully, with the third hit he will be the hat trick for him. This is in stark contrast with the depressed atmosphere in his office when I first went there.

In the office of this filmmaker, on the wall to the South hangs my Phoenix along with the framed stills of big films that have stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Sanjeev Kumar, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Jaya Bachchan, Parveen Babi and several other Bollywood biggies.

This film producer is the maker of the biggest hit Bollywood has ever produced. The ‘biggest’ in Bollywood is such a term that Aamir Khan’s Lagaan  is considered the biggest during the last decade but only after excluding Sunny Deol’s Gadar. Yash Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhaniyan Le Jayenge has broken all time records, running for over 10 years in Maratha Mandir but in the morning show only. Sholay  is another bench-mark. Rakesh Roshan has broken several records with films like Kaho Na Pyar Hai and Karan Arjun. So has Rajshri Films with Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun.

What this filmmaker had achieved was equally, if not more, mind-boggling. Yet, he consulted me for the Feng Shui of his office when he felt that things were not going right for him. And this always happens in the industry where luck changes every Friday, when new films are released. One such Friday turned this hot film maker thanda. Nothing seemed to work.

The man who once had every major star available at the shortest notice, and that too at a less than market rates, suddenly became untouchable. No one actually said anything. But the big names became a little difficult to reach. Their dates were not immediately available. Worse, the money supply dried up for a man who, till the other day, could give across-the-table profit. He could start and complete a big film without putting in a rupee from his own pocket. In fact, like Spielberg, he believed never in never investing his own money in his own film.

It had all started when he moved into a new place, an office in the western suburbs. Every film he subsequently made had bombed, and his confidence was shaken, when he consulted me three years ago.

Today, he has two hit films in his kitty and a third ready for release. I am sure the third too, will be good. What is more interesting is that the cast of his film includes the hot stars of today, a sure sign that he and his production company are not a spent force.  As everyone knows, hot stars don’t accept assignments from not-so-hot filmmakers. It is considered a cycle. Successful stars team up with successful filmmakers and vice versa. (The rare exception to the rule is Salman Khan. In the recent weeks, he appeared in Saawan, a film by Saawan Kumar Tak)

“Mohanji, looking back now, I can see that changes started within two months of your Feng Shui changes,” the producer admitted when we met recently. Before the Feng Shui changes, he had approached a TV production company with a proposal to do a daily soap. The company was not interested and declined.

“Three months later, the same people called. They had another proposal. They wanted me to produce three films for them. Finance was no problem, though the budgets were a restraint. I signed up the actors who were having a rough time or were new but had potential. We signed them for peanuts and by the time our films were released, one after the other, they became hot. We refused to sell the under-production project, hoping to get a better price when the film would be complete. By the time the films were ready, they were hot. And we got a much better deal from the distributors.”

With his fingers crossed, this producer is waiting for his third film to be released now.

Feng Shui, finally, brought happy days back for him!
