A fierce gun-battle was reported between the state police and the heavily armed Maoists at Guniapal in Dantewada district about 450 km south of Raipur on Wednesday.

According to the sources in police headquarter the rebels attacked a police party comprising of district police, special task force and special police officers (SPOs) when the latter was on a combing operation on the intelligence inputs about the presence of red guerrillas inside the forest near Guniapal. According to Bastar Inspector General of Police T J Longkumer there was major encounter between the police force and the armed Maoists.

“It is raining heavily and we need to further confirm the exact situation from the personnel who are yet to return”, the IG told Hindustan Times. Heavy downpour is making it difficult for the movement of additional forces who were rushed to the spot.

The police spokesperson Rajesh Mishra told that the forces gone inside the thick forest are yet to return so it is difficult to confirm anything now. “The police party comprised of around 80 jawans. So far we are unable to communicate with them but there is no report of any casualty”, said Mishra.
