After keeping the Rajasthan police waiting for over seven hours, controversial self-styled godman Asaram Bapu finally received summons on Tuesday afternoon.

Asaram has been accused of sexual assault by a minor girl and the summons were from the Jodhpur police asking him to appear before them within four days.

Sources inside the ashram said that Asaram Bapu would leave the ashram at 4pm to take a flight back to Gujarat. However, there was no official confirmation of these plans.

Rajasthan police sub-inspector Bhanwar Singh and constable Surendra, who had come with the summons said that they had personally handed over the summons to Asaram Bapu and the latter assured them that he would fully cooperate with the investigations.

Earlier, the two-man Rajasthan police team along with some policemen from the local Bhanwarkuan police station had come to serve the summons at around 7am. But, they were not allowed to meet Asaram Bapu. The ashram told the police that the godman was in meditation at ‘ekant vas’ and could not take the summons.

Meanwhile, around 50 odd supporters of Asaram shouted slogans in his favour and claimed that all the charges were false and their guru was like ‘God’.

At around 12:30pm, BJP MLA Ramesh Mendola also came to the ashram. Talking to the media he said that he had great faith in Asaram Bapu and had come to meet him in his personal capacity. He said that the charges against Asaram Bapu were a conspiracy and all the charges should be investigated threadbare.

Asaram on Monday night appeared a bit relieved during the evening satsang at his sprawling ashram after news filtered in that Section 376 (rape) had been dropped against him. Asaram, who was not scheduled to address the satsang on Monday changed plans after the news trickled in. However, the Jodhpur police later clarified that the rape charges had not been dropped.

Asaram said during the course of satsang, “Some people were happy and some people were surprised when the rape charges were dropped. I will give up food and water if I am forcibly arrested. Only public knows what it will do if he is arrested.”
