Dalit devotees’ long wait to pay obeisance to Lord Jagannath has ended. On Tuesday, the Orissa High Court supported their entry into the temple at Keradagada village in Kendarpara.

Dalits under the banner of the Ambedkar Lohia Vichar Mancha (ALVM) and the Keradagada Temple Entry Committee had organised protests against the ban on their entry.

They had planned to forcibly enter the sanctum sanctorum on November 26. Foreseeing trouble, the high court had banned the entry of devotees of all castes and colour into the temple.

A division bench of the high court comprising Chief Justice Sujit Barman Ray and Justice MM Das gave the verdict in favour of the Dalits on a public interest litigation filed by advocate Akshay Kumar Mallick from the Aul area.
