Union finance minister Arun Jaitley on Sunday night called on former chief minister and AIADMK supremo J Jayalalitha at her residence.
According to sources, the minister, who was in the city to attend the wedding of the daughter of RSS ideologue and chartered accountant S Gurmurthy, arrived at the Poes Garden residence of the former chief minister at 8.45 pm and was in the house for over half an hour.
It is believed that the senior BJP leader sought the support of AIADMK in Parliament, especially in the Rajya Sabha where the ruling NDA does not have the numbers, for passing crucial legislations. The union minister is also believed to have asked her for support for all bills, including the GST that the AIADMK had opposed.
He is the first union minister to have called on Jayalalitha after her conviction. The AIADMK in an official press release described the meeting as a courtesy call that lasted 40 minutes. Jayalalitha has not stepped outside her residence ever since she was released on bail.
